ANGEL
One of the most important rules when working on a construction site is being aware of your surroundings. There are hazards all over the placeâvehicles backing up, cranes swinging things through the air, heavy materials being moved aroundâif youâre distracted, youâll get hurt.
âAngel!â Mario grabs my arm, pulling me to an abrupt halt right before I walk straight into the path of an oncoming forklift. âJesus, man, thatâs the third time today. Where the hellâs your head?â
In Brooklyn, with Rhys. But I canât tell Mario that. âSorry, just⦠have a lot on my mind.â
âYeah?â He nudges me forward once the forklift passes. âLike what?â
Shoot. I shouldnât have said that. âNothing, just stuff at home.â
âSabrina and the baby?â
âUh, yeah.â It wouldâve been a good excuse if my ears werenât my own personal lie detector. They heat up, the tips turning red.
I hope Mario doesnât notice as we run across the street to grab coffees from the local deli.
âHow are they doing?â Mario asks as we wait our turn to be served at the counter.
âUh, theyâre fine?â
He casts a sideways glance at me, clearly confused. âBut you just saidâ¦â
Crap. My ears burn hot and I scratch my jaw through my beard. âYeah, uhâ¦â
Mario turns to face me fully, arms crossed over his chest. âDude, you okay? You look like youâre about to pass out.â
âIâm fine, I justâ ââ
The guy behind the counter waves us forward, thank the lord, and we place our orders for coffees. But if I think the short break will distract Mario enough to forget his question, Iâm wrong.
Itâs the middle of September and the hot summer weather has cooled into a breezy fall. Itâs the perfect temperature to stand outside, sipping our coffees and watching pedestrians walk past. Mario and I take up spots at the end of a row of other guys taking their breaks.
âSo,â Mario starts up again the second weâre settled. âI got a feeling this ainât about Sabrina and the baby.â
I scrunch up my face. I mean, I could technically make it about my sister and my nephew. Needing extra money to support them was the reason why I agreed to do gay porn in the first place.
But I didnât get paid to go watch Rhys at The Bronzed Rail. I didnât get paid to drive him home. I wasnât even thinking about money when Rhys and I⦠in my truck⦠yeah.
The extra money is nice, but who am I kidding? It isnât about the money anymore.
The video went live this morning. Rhys and Sebastian both sent me texts to let me know that the initial reception has been good. Exceeding expectations even. I donât know how I feel about that.
On the one hand, thatâs good, right? We want the video to do well. But on the other hand⦠the video is out there now, and hundreds and thousands of people are going to watch it. I donât think I really understood what that meant until this morning.
Sebastian had sent me the video and asked if I was still okay with it being released.
